Adult workshop: Maya Calendars and Astronomy with Dr. Gabrielle Vail

The Maya developed complex calendars that allowed them to calculate billions of years into the past, as well as into the future. They also devised complex astronomical tables to predict eclipses, the cycles of Venus and Mars, and the appearance and disappearance of stars and constellations in the nighttime sky. This workshop introduces participants to the three most important of the Maya calendars—the ritual cycle of 260 days, the 365-day solar calendar, and the Long Count used to commemorate historical dates. Participants will learn how to decipher calendrical texts recorded on historical Maya monuments and will learn how the Maya calculated Venus’ cycle.
